Three Counties Hospital kitchen staff

These photographs are courtesy of Malcolm Batey and show the Three Counties Hospital kitchen staff. Two of the photos show the staff with the food they have prepared for a New Year party, the other one shows the staff in an every day working environment.

From left to right in the picture below: Jack Batey (Malcolm's dad), Alec Devereux, Clive Batey (Malcolm's uncle), Bill Archer, Busty ? (that was his nickname), Basil Cooper (the butcher), Reg Buck.

Three Counties Asylum staff

The photo below, courtesy of Anne Fox, shows some of the Three Counties Asylum staff in the late 1890’s. Joseph Billington, the young man far left, was Anne’s great great grandfather. He became head gardener and worked his entire working life at the asylum. 

These are the non-medical staff (gardeners, butchers and engineers).

St Luke's chapel

Three Counties Asylum cricket team

A fantastic early photograph of the Three Counties Asylum cricket team. The clock tower has gone from the centre building which means that the photo was taken after 1902 (the clock tower had bee removed by this date). One of the team is a Mr Herbert (it is not known which one).

Staff photo

This photo was sent in by Ed Kavanagh (that’s him with the dirty shoes - his words!). Ed and his wife Myrtle worked at Fairfield from 1969 to 1975. Ed was Senior Nursing Officer (personnel) and Myrtle was Occupational Health Sister.

A relaxing time circa 1910

Although it was a hard job with long hours looking after the patients, this photo shows that there was time for relaxation. A band plays music (possibly the asylum band) while folks mingle on the lawn. By the look of the men's clothing this could have been a cricket event.

Florence May Brown

Florence started work at Three Counties Asylum on 22nd September 1914.

Two headed cow

The farmers at the Three Counties Asylum reared their own cattle for milk and meat. Calves were born on a regular basis but none perhaps as strange as this. It's not two cows, it is, in fact, a two headed cow. It was stillborn, and was rare and strange enough have been photographed. The photo was taken circa 1890.
