The helmet below is in very good condition for its age with the original liner, straps and brass buckle. In the past it had been highly polished and lacquered, but finish had a tired look because the lacquer had cracked and tarnished with age. The old lacquer was gently removed and the helmet was then sympathetically re-polished to shine once again. Merryweather Fireman's outfitters of London only ever supplied eight of these helmets to the Three Counties Asylum, making this a very rare artefact.
The HBH badge stands for the three counties of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire. The photos below show the helmet before and after re-finishing.
