These wall plaques were placed above certain doors in the asylum. This one is made of cast iron with the HBH insignia, HBH standing for Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire. The plaques may have been decorative air vent covers. The example below measures approximately 9 inches x 7 inches.
The example below was salvaged by Trevor Todd who acted as the site surveyor for P J Livesey when the asylum building was converted into flats. Trevor believes these may be ornamental grilles that were placed over doors. Their purpose was to allow air from the open window of an outside facing room to flow to inner rooms and wards within the building.
