Below is a Three Counties Hospital 1930’s nurse's emergency whistle, 3.5 inches tall (9.5 cm). The stamping reads:
THE METROPOLITAIN
THREE COUNTIES
HOSPITAL
J. HUDSON & CO
BARR ST. HOCKLEY
BIRMINGHAM
These whistles were carried by ward attendants in order to keep patients under control or to call for help if there was an attack or a patient was injured or sick. The whistle would be attached to the attendant's white coat by a chain and button clip.
