Many deaths had occurred through typhoid from the contaminated asylum water supply. Staff refused to drink from the taps, and provisions were made for a mineral water factory to be set up and supply fresh bottled mineral water. In 1911, attendants were able to purchase two mineral water bottles per day at a cost of 10 shillings (approximately 50p) annually.
