Three Counties Asylum had its own fire brigade made up of volunteers from the asylum's male attendants. Both young and older men volunteered to join the brigade and within a short time they became fully trained and equipped. Part of their equipment was the fireman's axe, like the one below which belonged to attendant C. Putman. These axes were supplied by Shand Mason & Co.
