The Three Counties Hospital had a top class cricket team that played not only local teams but also teams from all over the country. The original cricket pitch was laid in 1862, and it remained in place when the site was redeveloped into Fairfield Park in the early 21st century.
This cricket ball trophy below was presented to Eric Bircumshaw for outstanding play, It is engraved: 'To Eric Bircumshaw for scoring a hat trick against R.A.F. Shefford on the 24th August 1944'.
The American Air Force was posted at R.A.F. Shefford in 1950 and renamed it U.S.A.F Chicksands (after a 12th century Gilbertine monastery that once stood in its grounds).
