These tokens could only be spent at and within the hospital, and many patients were paid this way. The only 'real' cash they had would have been given to them by a visiting friend or relative. Alan 'S' remembers being paid 7/6 d a week in white tokens with 2/6 d written on them for working in the garden and farm.
